What the Bible says about baptism

Jesus Himself was baptized, and before He ascended He told His followers to baptize “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”

The New Testament explains baptism with a picture: going under the water is like being buried with Christ, and coming up is like rising with Him “walk in newness of life.” It is an outward sign of an inward change.

Churches practice it differently, as believers’ baptism or infant baptism, but the verses about its meaning are shared: a new creation, clothed with Christ, belonging to God.
