With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Humility, gentleness and patience keep the bond of peace between people.
Marriage is one of the first things the Bible talks about, and one of the last pictures it paints. Its marriage verses are for the wedding day and for the ordinary Tuesday after. Here is a verse for your marriage today.
A verse for you
With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Humility, gentleness and patience keep the bond of peace between people.
KJVWith all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
Humility, gentleness and patience keep the bond of peace between people.
And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken: two people, held together by God.
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Marriage from the very beginning: two people leave, cleave and become one.
Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
Love in marriage modeled on Christ: a love that gives itself up for the other.
And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
Love is what ties every other virtue together.
What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.
What God has joined together, let no one put asunder.
Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
Love described in actions: patient, kind, not proud, keeping no record of wrongs.
Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the Lord.
Finding a spouse is finding a good thing, and a gift of favor from the Lord.
And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.
Love deeply, because love covers a multitude of sins.
Genesis 2:24 sets the pattern: a man leaves his parents, cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh. Jesus quotes it and adds, “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
The New Testament describes marriage as two people loving the way Christ loves: humbly, patiently, giving themselves for the other. Ephesians 4:2-3 is as useful in an argument as at an altar: humility, gentleness, patience, “forbearing one another in love.”
Ecclesiastes 4:12 is often read at weddings: “a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” Two people held together by God are stronger than two alone.
Ephesians 4:2-3 for everyday life, Ecclesiastes 4:12 for the bond, and Genesis 2:24 for the foundation.
It calls both people to humility, patience and forgiveness (Colossians 3:13-14) and reminds them that “charity shall cover the multitude of sins” (1 Peter 4:8). Seek help from your church as well.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7 and Ruth 1:16 are the most common. See our page of Bible verses for a wedding.
