Bible Verses About Loneliness

Feeling lonely is not a sign that God has left you. The Bible gives lonely people words to pray: “Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted” (Psalm 25:16). And it answers with a promise of presence: the Lord “will not fail thee, neither forsake thee.”

A verse for you

Deuteronomy 31:8
And the Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

The Lord goes ahead of you and stays with you. You are not walking alone.

What the Bible says

Loneliness is not only being alone. You can feel it in a full house, a busy church or a marriage: the sense that no one really sees you. The Bible names it honestly. A psalmist writes, “no man cared for my soul.” Jesus told His friends they would scatter and “leave me alone,” and in Gethsemane they slept while He prayed. Paul, near the end of his life, wrote that at his trial “all men forsook me.”

Into that loneliness the Bible speaks of God’s presence and His attention. Hagar, a slave woman who had fled into the desert, gave God a name of her own: “Thou God seest me.” Isaiah says a mother could sooner forget her nursing child than God forget you. Psalm 139 says there is nowhere you can go where He is not. And Jesus’ own answer to being left was, “and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me.”

God’s answer to loneliness also includes people. At the very beginning He said, “It is not good that the man should be alone,” and Psalm 68 says “God setteth the solitary in families.” The church is meant to be one of those families, a place where people weep with those who weep. If you can, take one small step toward someone this week: a message, a call, a small group, a volunteer shift. Needing people is not a lack of faith; it is how God made you.

Loneliness that lasts can weigh like depression. If it has settled into hopelessness, or you have begun to think others would be better off without you, please reach out now: in the US, call or text 988, any time; elsewhere, call your local emergency number. Talking with a counselor, a doctor or a pastor is a good step too.

A prayer

Lord, I feel alone, and You know it. Turn to me and have mercy on me. You are the God who sees me, even when no one else seems to. You have not forgotten me, and there is nowhere I can go where You are not. Stay with me tonight. Lead me to people who will walk with me, and make me that kind of friend to someone else. Amen.

Questions people ask

What does the Bible say about loneliness?

It treats loneliness as real and painful, not as a failure. It promises God’s presence (Deuteronomy 31:8, Matthew 28:20), shows that He sees those others overlook (Genesis 16:13), and calls His people to be family for the solitary (Psalm 68:6).

Is it wrong for a Christian to feel lonely?

No. God Himself said it is not good to be alone (Genesis 2:18), before sin ever entered the world. Jesus felt abandoned by His friends, and David prayed, “I am desolate and afflicted.” Loneliness is a need to bring to God and to others, not something to hide.

What verse can I hold onto when I feel forgotten?

Isaiah 49:15: “yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.” Genesis 16:13 is for feeling unseen: Hagar called the Lord “Thou God seest me.”

How can I find community when I feel alone, even at church?

Start small and be patient. A smaller group, a serving team or one person you ask for coffee often opens more than a large service. Tell a pastor you are struggling; it is part of their calling. And if your church has hurt you, it is not faithless to look for a healthier community.

Where can I get help right now if loneliness feels unbearable?

If you are in danger or thinking about ending your life, please reach out now. In the US, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, free and open day and night. Outside the US, call your local emergency number. Then tell someone you trust; you do not have to carry this alone.
